Summer - 2010

Summer is here and it could be a long dry fall.

Remember to adjust your sprinkler timer to meet your yard's needs.  Check your sprinklers to ensure your water is being placed where you want it.  Most agree, watering concrete or hardscape is unnecessary, yet we forget that applying more water to our grass or plants may also be unneeded.  Small brown spots on a lawn may be caused by insects, disease, or hardware inefficiencies, not the lack of water - so more water may not be the solution.  Using water efficiently is what we are all about.

Water efficient landscapes not only save work and money; often they require less maintenance and can provide you more free time.  If summer was too short for you; consider altering your yard work.  Fall is a great time to start new plantings and right now is time to start planning.  We can help; look to our upcoming events and plan to attend.  We will help you bring your yard to low maintenance life with lots of native plants.

We have all heard we are experiencing a La Nina condition.  La Nina refers to climatic conditions which will increase the probability of cooler and drier conditions in the Southwestern US.  If you want to know more about La Nina or El Nino please follow this link to the  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) http://www.pmel.noaa.gov/tao/elnino/la-nina-story.html.

Rincon and the San Diego County Water Authority remain in the level two drought response.  The Water Supply status remains a concern, reserves were depleted during the past 3 years has only been partially replenished.  Next year’s weather is unknown so going forward without a full reserve could bring us back to a dangerously low water supply.  Considering San Diego County is the end of two long pipelines crossing numerous earthquake faults and other hazardous to our supply reliability.

It is not too late to get a free landscape audit.  Call us and say, “I want an audit”.  We are not the IRS and a helpful and qualified landscape consultant will visit you at your convenience and help you to make more efficient watering choices.

Fire season is here, please look at your yard and remove the fuel around your home.  When the fire comes, please listen for local notifications and evacuation orders.  Staying in your home to fight the fire may put your life at risk and emergency response personnel as well.  At Rincon, during fires, our objective is to ensure full support of the water service to the fire department, individual efforts to run sprinklers may deplete the water supply or water pressures needed by the Fire Department.  For tips on preparing for Fire:  http://www.ci.escondido.ca.us/fire/

Experience has demonstrated that the most successful recovery from a fire disaster started with preparation before the fire.  Now is time to start.  Often your fire insurance is the best place to start.  For more tips on insurance:  http://www.insurance.ca.gov/wf-con-info/index.cfm.

If you are considering reducing your landscape water needs, now is a good time to take action.  We can help.  With licensed professionals, we offer water audits for your home or business at no cost to you.  Our goal is to help you use less water permanently.

We continue to ask that you follow these few simple rules:

  • Irrigate only between the hours of 7:00 pm to 9:00 am to reduce water loss to evaporation.

  • Repair leaks as soon as possible or within 72 hours if you are notified by the District.

  • Do not allow water to run off your property; it is not helping any one.

  •  Adjust your sprinklers and your timer to eliminate runoff and provide only the amount of water your plants need.

Make your water count! Call us when you need assistance on water issues, we have a knowledgeable team.
