"Yes, I CAN Do That"   Xeriscape Garden

On April 26, 1997, Rincon's Board of Directors dedicated the xeriscape garden located at the District office to the citizens of the Escondido Valley.  The purpose of the garden was three-fold: 1) to educate the community about water efficient plants and irrigation systems; 2) to encourage the incorporation of these elements into the landscape; and 3) to serve as a community resource.

The garden was inspired in part by the 1987-1993 drought.  The drought threatened as much as a 50% reduction in water used by all San Diego County consumers.  Most landscapes can not survive a 50% reduction in water and the resulting loss would have been substantial to the homeowner.  Xeriscape is a creative approach to landscape design which emphasizes water conservation by placement and selection of plants appropriate to our arid climate.  These plants, once established, often take little to no supplemental water throughout the warm summer months.

Although our current xeriscape garden demonstrates only southern California plantings, we have great changes in store for the coming year.  Our garden will eventually contain eight distinctive xeriscape zones that will present a greater selection of xeriscape possibilities.  It is our goal to inspire our visitors to know that, "Yes, I CAN do That" at their very own homes.

Our garden is open daily, 7 days a week.  A self-guiding tour brochure is available in the District lobby, Monday through Friday, 7:30 am to 5:00 pm.
