Is Recycled Water Safe to Use? Yes! Recycled water is made by purifying wastewater. It is given additional disinfection and filtration processes that make it safe for irrigation. Recycled water is carefully monitored to protect public health and safety, and is strictly regulated by the local and state Health Departments and the Regional Water Quality Control Board. It is safely used at hundreds of parks, schools, greenbelts, agricultural operations, and golf courses throughout California. The recycled water pipeline system is completely separate from your drinking water system. |

| Who Benefits from Recycled Water? Everyone benefits from recycled water. As the population in California continues to grow from the current 32 million to an estimated 52 million people by the year 2030, so does the demand on our limited water supply. Since our drinking water supply is limited, finding ways to conserve our supply is critical. By using recycled water for irrigation, we can conserve our precious drinking water supply while providing a reliable, growing, and drought-proof source of additional water. | ||||||
| If Recycled Water is Safe, Why Can't We Drink It? Would you go swimming in a lake? Probably so. But would you drink the lake water? Probably not. Lake water is great for swimming, and as an environment for fish, but we do not know how safe it is for drinking because it has never been treated or disinfected and it may contain microorganisms. Potable water is treated to a very high degree that makes it safe for drinking. In short, your drinking water is treated through strict filtration and disinfection processes that remove solids and bacteria. | What Will Happen if My Pet Accidentally Drinks Recycled Water? Recycled water is almost as pure as drinking water. It has been carefully treated and has been disinfected to kill microorganisms. As a result of this treatment, recycled water is perfect for you to use as water for your garden and lawns. Even if you or a family pet swallowed recycled water, it should not make you sick. But it may still contain some nutrients or dissolved metals and salts that keep it from meeting our strict drinking water standards. | |||||
| Who is Paying for the Rincon Recycled Water Project? In simple terms, the customers who will be using the recycled water are paying for the project. The revenue from these customers will pay back the money that funded the recycled water project. However, all Rincon customers indirectly help to support recycled water programs. Both the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California and the San Diego County Water Authority offer subsides to any member agency that builds a recycled water project. And, the State of California Water Resources Control Board will potentially fund 25% to 40% of the $3 million project. All of these funding sources are supported through fees and taxes that we all pay. | Can Someone from Rincon Address Recycled Water at my Homeowner's Association or Club Meeting? Yes, if your group or association is located within the Rincon service area, we would love to provide you with a presentation about our Recycled Water Project. You can schedule a presentation today by dropping us an email (click here) or you can contact our Recycled Water Program Director toll-free at 1-866-SMART H20 (1-866-762-7842). | |||||
